Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23
Comment
Sometimes our reaction to something our partner says or does seems surprisingly big. A small comment lands badly, a familiar tone makes us bristle, or we suddenly find ourselves defensive or upset.
Often, these moments are touching something deeper. Our relationships don’t begin with a blank page — we bring our histories, fears, disappointments and experiences with us. Sometimes the present moment brushes against an old wound.
Learning to notice this can change a conversation. Instead of immediately asking “What’s wrong with you?” or even “What’s wrong with me?”, we can become curious: “I wonder why that felt so big?”
That little bit of curiosity can create space for compassion — for ourselves and for each other.
Reflection
Are there situations that reliably touch a nerve for either of you? What might be happening underneath the reaction?
Prayer suggestion (as a couple)
Ask God to give you curiosity and compassion when strong feelings arise, and wisdom to understand what may be underneath them.
Prayer suggestion (for another couple)
Pray for a couple who seem caught in the same painful reactions — that greater understanding would help them respond differently to each other.
Final quote
“Curiosity asks what hurt before judgement decides who is wrong.”
