This is the confidence we have in approaching God; that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him. 1 John 5: 14-15

This week I met an angry man. He had reason to be angry, but his anger was a barrier to love; intimacy was impossible. We discussed his anger and the fear and sense of injustice that was causing it. He had an understandable desire to ‘strike back’. We prayed that he would give his desire for revenge to God, that he would forgive and that he and his wife would learn to love again.

Two days later I heard that the anger had ‘miraculously’ gone.

Many of us have things that we want to change in our marriages and we can – with God’s help.

Prayer (as a couple)

God loves us to trust him and to live to the full. The passage from 1 John tells us that God immediately answers prayers according to his will. It’s in our interest to live this out especially when we know that there are things in our lives that need to change.

Dear Lord, thank you for ___ (partner). Lord I want to love him/her more according to your plan. Help me to change ___ (an aspect or behaviour) in the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can become more unified and a better witness to you in our lives. Amen

Prayer (for others)

Dear Lord, we lift up ___ and ___ to you. We pray that ___ (an aspect or behaviour) will change in their relationship. Help them to love each other your way, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Final Quote

God will help us to change, to love his way. All we have to do is ask and ‘we know that we have what we asked of him’.
