We understand what love is when we realisethat Christ gave his life for us. That means we must give our lives for each other (in this case of husband/wife). 1 John 3:16

Most of us must have seen the famous footprints poem; it is seen everywhere reproduced on cards, tea-towels, posters etc. When the question is asked, “Where were you God when I was in trouble?” God answers, “When the two parallel sets of footprints become one set, I was carrying you.”

Perhaps the poem could be re-interpreted as indicating the times in our marriages when, with God’s help we have to carry our husband or wife through a difficult time, in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, for richer for poorer.

Prayer (as a couple)

On our wedding day we made some very powerful promises, Father God please help us when we have to carry our wife or husband through a difficult time, perhaps even now! Give us the strength and perseverance needed to be the needed support.

Prayer (for others)

Father, please help ___ and ___ who are going through a difficult time at the moment sue to sickness/financial problems/family issues/work ____. Please give ___ the strength and perseverance to keep going and carry their wife/husband for a while.

Final Quote

For richer, for poorer

  1. Lord, I realise the road ahead may not be easy; but I purpose to hold fast and stay the course. Help me not grow weary in the battles I face; but instead seek You continually to Fight the good fight on my behalf. And grant me faithfulness and perseverance. Thank You for your promise of eternal life in your presence. Amen
