These days independence is often seen as a good thing … ‘do what’s right for you’ we’re told.
Now I’m lucky, I have a partner who’s usually ready to quickly forgive and accept em when I mess up … something I do regularly. Occasionally I am admonished too! Sometimes, for whatever reason, it seems I’m not ready to accept this forgiveness, acceptance or admonishment; my undefended streak come out and I make me myself difficult to love.
For Christians and particularly couples, we’re given a message of unity. It’s about interdependence not independence. We need each other … even though we don’t often show it.
Prayer (as a couple)
Dear Father, You encourage unity and interdependence amongst Christians particularly in marriage. Help me to give and receive the love, acceptance and forgiveness of _____ (partner), even though at times I may not feel like it. Please rule over my independence through the Holy Spirit and may we, as a couple, know our God given needs for each other and demonstrate unity that pleases and glorifies you. Amen.
Prayer (for others)
Dear Father, we lift up _____ and _____ to you. Please help each of them to be less independent and more interdependent. May they recognise their God given needs for each other. Please help them to give and receive love, acceptance and forgiveness in a way that pleases you. Amen
