Scripture

Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. James 1:19

Comment

One of the greatest gifts we can give each other is to listen — not just to words, but to the heart behind them. Yet so often we prepare our replies instead of truly hearing, or we assume we already know what our partner means.

We’ve noticed that when we slow down and really listen — with curiosity instead of defensiveness — we often discover something deeper: a need, a longing, a vulnerability that helps us draw closer.

Reflection

When was the last time you felt truly heard by your partner? What helped you feel that way?

Prayer suggestion (as a couple)

Pray for patience and openness as you listen to one another — you might simply say: “Lord, help me to hear not just words, but the heart behind them.”

Prayer suggestion (for another couple)

Ask God to help another couple you know listen to each other with kindness and compassion.

Final quote

Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable. David Augsburger
