Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:18

Comment

Gratitude doesn’t deny the hard stuff — it sits beside it and says, “Even here, something good is still present.”

In marriage, it’s easy to notice what’s lacking, what’s annoying, what’s not working. But when we intentionally look for what we appreciate in each other — even the small things — we start to see differently. The atmosphere shifts. Our partner feels seen. We feel more connected.

We’ve found that saying “thank you” out loud, especially for things we’ve started to take for granted, brings a quiet warmth that stays with us. It reminds us that this shared life is a gift.

Reflection

What do you appreciate about each other today — however small? Could you take a moment to say thank you, without caveats or corrections?

Prayer (as a couple)

Lord, thank you for the gift of each other. Help us to notice the good, speak gratitude out loud, and stay open to the beauty in our everyday life. Amen.

Prayer (for another couple)

We pray for _____ and _____ — that gratitude would rise up in their hearts and draw them closer to each other and to you. Amen.

Final quote

It is not joy that makes us grateful. It is gratitude that makes us joyful.David Steindl-Rast
