Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? But even if you suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened.” But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. 1 Peter 3:13-15a
Comment
I don’t like horror films but I know they are popular. One of the things I don’t like is that they turn fear into entertainment.
Fear is a strong emotion. It can be positive when it stops us from doing something dangerous. It can be negative when it stops us from trying new things like eating unfamiliar food. It’s also not good when fear keeps us stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior such as leaving conflict unresolved because we are afraid of confronting our partner. We may not be totally honest and open because of fear of abandonment or harsh criticism.
What are you afraid of?
According to this passage we have nothing to fear if we are living lives for Christ and doing good. We may suffer for doing what is right, but we do not need to fear.
Prayer (as a couple)
Father God, thank you that we have nothing to fear when we are in a right relationship with Jesus and doing what he wants. Help us to turn from anything that is evil and do good, in our marriages, with others and at work even if it’s difficult. Amen.
Prayer (for others)
Father God, we pray for … and … We ask that you will help them to turn away from evil and towards Jesus. Help them to know what is good and right for their everyday lives and marriage through the power of your Holy Spirit. Amen.
Final quote
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. Psalm 91:4-6
