Be alert!

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you up in good time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.  1 Peter 5:6-9

Comment

I was in a position to promote marriage in a fairly public place this week. One lady hurried past, joking as she went that she was “much too close to the divorce for that.” She may really have been joking, or maybe masking the hurt of an irretrievable situation.

Threats to the stability of our marriage can be the results of our actions – or of our inaction. Maybe the latter are harder to spot; the cumulative effect of things like complacency or skewed priorities (about work, church, etc) can lead us to a point we never intended to reach.

Let’s commit to each other to always be on the lookout for warning signs.

Prayer (as a couple)

Lord, we want our marriage to grow and flourish. We commit to be alert as individuals and as a couple to see anything that would cause it to wither and become weaker. Help us to see the hazards clearly so that we can stand firm and avoid the heartache of ‘if only’. Amen

Prayer (for others)

Lord, we pray for ___ and ___ who seem to be ‘sleepwalking towards danger’ for their marriage. Alert them to the situation. Give us and others the sensitivity to recognise opportunities to encourage them in building strength into their relationship. Amen

Final Quote

‘ … put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
