I lie awake thinking of you, meditating on you through the night. Psalm 63:6 (NLT)

Comment

Do you ever lie awake at night?

Sometimes we can both find ourselves tossing and turning.

Sometimes, it’s just me that is trying desperately to get to sleep and yet my mind is struggling to settle. I try lying in different positions. Again and again I turn, attempting to make the pillow more comfy.

And so often my lovely husband, who has by now woken up, turns towards me and starts to stroke my head. This tender act is so kind and sacrificial. I love him for it. And in the morning he asks me what was playing on my mind and we talk and pray about my anxious thoughts.

But sometimes I’m awake and feel very alone. And in the darkness I reach out to God and meditate on a verse, praying it over and over.

This week we continue our prayerful exploration of psalm 63. Talk with your spouse about those times when you find it hard to sleep. Share what you think and feel in those times. Then pray for each other.

Prayer (as a couple)

Heavenly Father, thank you that we are never alone. Your presence is always with us, even in the dark stillness of the night. We pray for one another that in those times we would know your comforting presence and your peace. Help us also to support one another with kindness in any anxious or difficult periods. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

Prayer (for others)

Heavenly Father, we pray for… and …. We pray that they would know your comforting presence and peace in those nights where they lie awake. We pray that they would comfort and help each other as well. We pray in Jesus name. Amen.
