God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgement, because in this world we are like him. 1 John 4:16-17
Comment
In a programme about Paris the other evening, the presenter commented on how many French phrases there were to describe something (in that instance, of a rather sordid nature). However it did serve to highlight how limited the English language can sometimes be.
The bible has at least five different aspects (friendship, family, sacrificial, romantic, and sexual) that we cover with one word ‘love’. All of those aspects of love are part of the marriage relationship ‘recipe’ – and it’s not as tasty if any of the ingredients are missing.
Maybe you can see that one aspect could do with some attention. Why not surprise your husband or wife by saying or doing something that brings you closer to the complete, perfect love that God wants us to aim for in marriage?
Prayer (as a couple)
Father, thank you that some expressions of love come naturally to each of us. Please help us as we try to improve the aspects of love that we find more of a struggle. We want to bless each other and you in the completeness of our love. Amen
Prayer (for others)
Father, we pray for ___ and ___. Thank you for their commitment to each other. Help them to make those adjustments that will enable them to find real joy in each other. Amen
Final Quote
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear … (1 John 4:18)
