How many ways to say ‘I love you’?

Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body. Proverbs 16.24

Comment

In last week’s ePrayer we talked about different ways of expressing our love.  This week we thought we’d look at speaking out our love.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s love poem is one of the most popular ever written.

‘How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I love thee to the depth and breadth and height

My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight

For the ends of being and ideal grace.’

It is not always easy to express our love verbally. Not everyone has a way with words, some of us feel embarrassed and maybe others reckon they have been married far too long to need to state what is surely the obvious!

Perhaps you ‘say it with flowers’ or express how you feel in other practical ways. The writer of Proverbs however, particularly encourages us to communicate our positive thoughts and warm emotions verbally as this will bless the listener and do them good.

And we can do that in the form of a prayer – thanking God for our wonderful spouse, even if we’re not feeling particularly romantic!

Whether you celebrate Valentines Day or not, take some time in the next week to verbally let your partner know how much they mean to you.

Prayer (as a couple)

Heavenly Father, I love (name). Even in times of misunderstanding s/he is precious to me. Help us each to express our love in ways that are right for us and remind us to do it often. Amen

Prayer (for others)

Lord Jesus, we pray for (names). Please grant them freedom to communicate their love, at every level. Inspire them to express their feelings creatively and caringly so their marriage can be built up and blessed. Amen.

Final Quote

Let us seek to express our love from sincere hearts, with kindness and patience.
