Scripture:
Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil. 1 Thess 5: 19-22 NASB
Comment:
Unlike many houses in the UK, ours doesn’t have a name. I think ‘Holdfast’ would be a good one. A sign with that name would remind us, going in and coming out, that we need to hold fast to what we know to be true, even when life tells us the opposite. ‘You’re suffering – how can God care?’ Yet he does. ‘I can’t find a Christian group that suits me, so I’ll worship at home.’ We know we should not give up meeting together. The examples are endless.
‘Holdfast’ would also remind us that there are things to let go of. Bad attitudes. Actions that are just plain wrong. Friendships and certain fun things that tear at our souls and block God’s light.
It would remind us that Jesus holds us fast. He’s got us in his grip and he won’t let us go. What a great banner that would be over our home.
Prayer (as a couple):
Heavenly Father, remind us of the things we need to hold on to. Help us to be sensitive to the leading of your Spirit in letting go of things which don’t please you. Amen.
Prayer (for others):
Lord Jesus, we especially pray for _______ and _______. Help them to come to a new awareness of trust in you, so that they can experience your strong grip on their lives. Amen.
Quote:
‘My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.’ John 10: 27-29 NASB
