Scripture

The LORD replied, “I will make all my goodness pass before you, and I will call out my name, Yahweh, before you…… The LORD continued, “Look, stand near me on this rock.  As my glorious presence passes by, I will hide you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.  Then I will remove my hand and let you see me from behind. But my face will not be seen.” Exodus 33:19-23 (selection)

Comment

Many of us find ourselves between a rock and a hard place right now.  The constant difficult news brings us down and makes us want to cheer ourselves up but it’s difficult to find ways of doing that due to restrictions.  Others are finding the isolation is bringing about mental health challenges but they also don’t want to get sick from the virus.

When we are in that place we can see God and all his extraordinary goodness pass before us. Sometimes he covers us with his hand. He shows us a place where we can stand near him on the rock. It doesn’t necessarily feel comfortable or safe but we will never be the same again because we will know him in a deeper way. We will know his name!

Prayer (as a couple)

Father God, thank you that you don’t leave us to get on with it when we are in difficulties – even those times when it’s all our own fault. Instead you show us even more of your grace and love. Nevertheless we are afraid and we don’t know what to do. Lord, help us to come to you together – help us be humble and admit we need your help. Help us not to make excuses but to depend on your loving kindness. Help us be kind to each other too. Amen.

Prayer (for others)

Lord God You are our rock. We pray for our friends _____ and _____. Please Lord place them near you in a safe place. May they see you pass by – all your goodness; all your love. Lord, deliver them from evil and may they emerge from their difficulties even more convinced of your kindness and commitment to them and their family. Lord will you also enable them to see each other’s faces and to show each other their love and commitment during this stressful time. Amen

Final quote

The name of the LORD is a strong fortress; the godly run to him and are safe. Proverbs 19:10
