Three legged race

Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing (win a prize). 1 Peter 3:8 (winds in bracket mine)

I have seen marriage likened to a three legged race. Do you remember the junior school sports day either as a participant or as a parent or grandparent?

The three legged race often produced the best fun, kids tumbling over, getting up, arguing and then trying again. It take co-ordination, humility, practice and perseverance to become a good three legged team and of course forgiveness when you get in a tangle and have a tumble. All ingredients for a good marriage wouldn’t you say?

Prayer (as a couple)

Father, sometimes it would seem so much easier to run the race freely on our own. However we are in this together, help us to concentrate, practice patience, humility and forgiveness. Help us persevere when we tumble over in a heap. Keep us in step with each other and help us have some fun! Amen

Prayer (for others)

Father, we pray for ___ and ___ who seem to be having many ‘tumbles’ at the moment. Please help them to persevere, practice patience and forgiveness and even have some fun together. Amen

Final Quote

Walking in step – in harmony takes practice and humility.
