Bear – endure – carry each other’s burdens and troublesome moral faults and in this way fulfil and observe perfectly the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2 (Amplified Bible)

Jesus said “And now I give you a new commandment: LOVE one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34

Comment

We forget what love looks like – that’s why we cry at weddings! Jesus showed us what love really looks like. He ‘bears with us’ to the extent of bearing our sins and it cost him everything!

In marriage we see plenty to moan about every day. Faults, failings, weaknesses, sin – it’s all there. Can we learn how to bear each other’s ‘troublesome weaknesses’ and each other’s worries?

Surely one of the great challenges of love in a marriage today is learning to live with each other’s weak human nature, and discovering how to help each other to persevere.

Prayer (as a couple)

Father God, your Son Jesus has shown us very clearly what love looks like. Everything He did and said came out of love. Inspire us to go beyond the norms of compassion in our marriage and family lives. May Christ’s love work in our hearts and enable us to carry each other’s burdens and weaknesses with tenderness and not with reluctance and exasperation. So make our love strong for our families and communities. Amen.

Prayer (for others)

We pray for our friend’s ___ and ___ Help them shoulder their burdens together. Give them courage to be completely open with each other and not try to hide weaknesses. May you so inspire them with your love that they are able to overcome the difficulties they are encountering right now. Amen.

Final Quote

Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Philippians 2:4
