Money – a dangerous lover

Scripture

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”  Hebrews 13:5-6

Comment

I went out with some friends last night and I left feeling sad. The talk centred around pursuing money. There was a lot of envy and bitterness in the air and broken relationships too. Is this what happens when we fall in love with money?

I find it easy to loose perspective (especially when I’m busy) and that can be dangerous. Money is a subtle, attractive and dangerous lover. I easily forget  that loving money dishonours God and it’s neither good for me, nor my relationships. Instead I am to be content with what I have, and I know I needn’t be afraid for the Lord is my helper.  He’s the one who deserves my love. I bet I’m not the only one who occasionally struggles with this.

Do you love money more than God?

How does your money situation affect your relationships?

What would help you to become more content?

Prayer (as a couple)

Dear Father, It’s you who deserves our love for what you’ve done for us, not money. Father God please reveal to ….. (partner’s name) and me  the truth in the way we regard money. Help us to be content and not to be afraid, for we know you’ll never leave us and you are our helper. Help us to love and trust you more than anything. For we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prayer (for others)

Dear Father, we pray for …. and …. . Reveal to them the state of their hearts and show them if  they love money more than you. Help them to turn to you and to love and trust you and to be content, in the knowledge that you are with them and you are their helper. Amen

Final Quote

For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Tim 6.10)
