Advent – a time of anticipation

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned …. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:2,6

The run-up to Christmas for families can – in my experience at least – involve stress, concern about how much everything costs, complicated arrangements and huge amounts of food preparation.

What a challenge it is, in the midst of festivities, to focus on the reason for the season and find some moments of stillness. We want to try as a couple this year to find more opportunities to contemplate the extraordinary miracle of Jesus coming to earth as a helpless babe to live amongst us, to grow up within an ordinary family, to bring a message of healing, holiness and help to the common people of Israel and die to save us from our sins.

Advent is a time of anticipation, of wonder and preparation for the coming of Jesus – 2000 years ago, today in our hearts and at some future time when he returns, the King and Judge of all the earth.

Prayer (as a couple)

Lord Jesus, we want to put You at the centre of our Christmas celebrations. Please help us to encourage one another to do this and come under each other’s loads as we prepare for the busyness of this time. Thank you Lord for Your love. Amen

Prayer (for others)

Father, we pray for _____ and _____ for whom Christmas will not be an easy time. Please help them as they reflect on the difficulties this year has brought and give them a fresh sense of joy as they prepare for the celebration of Your birth. May advent be a precious time for them. Amen

Final Quote

Lord Jesus Christ; we welcome You into our hearts this Advent time.

Wishing you a very Happy Christmas from the When2Pray Team!
